Wheldrake U15’s claim Cup Final victory
20th April 2024
Wheldrake U15’s were crowned 2024 Cup winners after a dramatic match-winner in extra-time to run out 3-2 victors!

The atmosphere was electric, with over 200 people watching the final supporting both teams. Dunnington FC kindly stepped in with a week’s notice to host the final. The playing surface, facilities and people who helped make the day special were all fantastic and a great credit to their club and grassroots football.
It was Wheldrake who had the better of the opening exchanges which saw Cameron Maxton let fly finishing off a well worked move taking the lead. Bottesford Town found a way into the game through an unfortunate own goal seeing the teams go into half time 1-1.
After the restart, the game began to open up with both sides displaying top class football. Jack Darlow was called into action for Wheldrake, pulling off several huge saves to keep us in the match.
In the 78th minute, Cameron Maxton was presented with an opening firing the ball toward goal which made its way through a crowd and 2-1 to Wheldrake. Just when we thought we had done enough to win it, a stoppage time corner allowed Bottesford Town to throw bodies forward into the box making it 2-2 forcing the tie to extra-time.
Extra time was tense with both sides creating chances and with just 30 seconds left on the clock, Jay Rugg broke free from the defence slotting the ball past the keeper calmly scoring what was the all-important match-winning goal.
The match officials selected Jack Darlow as the player of the match.
The lads have been amazing all season. Today was a display of true grit and determination from every player and the support from our spectators was incredible. I am super proud of what they have accomplished.
