Another 2-3 With Duffield

(Peter Whelerton 26/01/2020)

2    Wheldrake JFC Under 16s
3    North Duffield

(Match Date: Saturday 25th January 2020)
In the usual close, high-scoring game with Duffield Wheldrake were a little unlucky to come away with nothing.

After a rocky start where we were off the pace and conceded to a scrappy scramble after a corner, we reorganised and bossed the remaining 30 minutes of the first half.

Matthew G immediately switched to right wing made an immediate impact as he cut inside to curl a lovely shot from 20 yards over the keeper and into the top of the net for 1-1.

We continued to press with Max F winning some balls and raiding forward and Matthew G continuing to cause problems. A lovely diagonal ball by Max F again but Mark in down the left. His cross flashed across the goal but there was no one there to stab home.

At the other end Henry made some good positive moves off his line to shut down attacks and made a terrific save high to his right clawing the ball out of the corner.

But Andrew was doing well picking up the ball and finding Shaun or Matthew who got another chance but shot wide.

HALF TIME : North Duffield 1 vs Wheldrake 1

The second half started badly as quickly conceded a second but in controversial circumstances. A cross from the right came into the 6 yard box. Kayce went with the forward and the forward nudged the ball in with his arm but the ref saw it as a Wheldrake arm and gave the goal for 1-2.

We struggled to make too many dents on a strong Duffield defence and Henry was kept the busier of the two keepers. There was more controversy as Harri slid on the forward going through. It look like he'd nicked the ball but the ref appeared to point to the spot. Howls of protest followed and the ref then pointed for a goal kick.

With only minutes to go some soft defending saw the right winger given too much space and he picked out a cross to an unmarked forward in the box to tuck away for 3-1.

That would've been harsh on Wheldrake and so it proved when Matthew wriggled down the left this time, got into the box and picked up a rebound off a Shaun shot to fire into the roof of the net for 2-3.

FULL TIME : North Duffield 2 vs Wheldrake 3

Scorers : Matthew G (2)

Man of the Match: Matthew G for carrying the threat to North Duffield, scoring a glorious first and having the tenacity in the final minute to get a second.
